At 37, Jerod Mayo now will develop to be the NFL’s youngest head coach, taking on a title that Sean McVay had held since being named the Rams head coach in 2017; Mayo is a month younger than McVay.

NFL Community’s Ian Rapoport reported Friday that the Patriots “will now work to hire a recent GM to work with” Mayo.

Mayo replaces Bill Belichick, who won six Desirable Bowls, nine AFC titles and 17 AFC East crowns during his 24-yr profession with the Pats. Belichick and the crew mutually parted ways after the 2023 campaign.

This promotion almost felt inevitable, especially given owner Robert Kraft’s feedback final offseason following a contract extension. Per Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald, Kraft called Mayo “a solid candidate to be the inheritor apparent” final offseason.

“There’s not any ceiling on (Mayo’s) skill to be a head coach—and he’ll be a head coach,” Kraft said at the time. “I’m obvious of that. I’m hoping he’s with us, so we’ll gaze what occurs.”

Rapoport also identified as Mayo a “solid candidate” to win the job.

Mayo is with them, and that prophecy has now been fulfilled.

Mayo conducted with the Patriots from 2008-2015, earning Pro Bowl honors in 2010 and 2012 and All-Pro honors in 2010 (NFL-high 175 tackles). He used to be also the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2008.

Four years later, Unusual England employed Mayo as its internal linebackers coach. Now he’s earned a tough-earned promotion to head coach as he becomes entirely the 2d Patriots head coach this century.
